The Benue Young Lawyers Initiative for Peace and Justice has petitioned President Muhammadu Buhari and the Nigeria Police Force over the spate of killings in the state.

The petition, signed by Barrister Simon Zungwe and Monday Akor, the president and secretary general of the initiative respectively, urged the police to rescue the state from looming chaos.

The group, in the petition dated 24th July and copied to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), alleged that on Friday, 17th July, 2015 at about 10am, some gunmen suspected to be hired killers invaded the construction site of a Peoples Democratic Party stalwart and elder statesman in Katsina-Ala local government area of Benue State, Chief Atoza Ihindan and shot him dead.

“Until his death, Chief Atoza was the political godfather of former Benue State governor, Gabriel Suswam, and served as chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party Elders’ Forum in the Benue North East Senatorial District”, the group said.

The young lawyers said within the month of July alone, members of the same gang suspected to have killed the late Chief Atoza were reported to have committed serial atrocities in the state, particularly Benue North East Senatorial District, ranging from destruction of valuable properties to kidnapping and killing of about 19 persons.
